Containers

Barry facilitates container transportation by rail from a terminal on No. 4 Berth. This terminal, operated by Group Samat on behalf of Dow Corning, receives daily trainloads of minerals for Dow Corning’s Barry complex, and is handling increasing quantities of export containers in conjunction with deep-sea services at other ABP ports.

Dry Bulks

Bulk commodities are handled at the port by specialist handling equipment, including a Fuchs materials handler. The port is capable of handling a wide variety of bulk cargoes that feed a number of local processing and manufacturing facilities.

Forest Products

ABP has recently invested in the modernisation of Transit Shed A, following a new commercial agreement with Scott Timber Ltd, the UK’s number-one pallet producer. The facility is being used for the direct import of Latvian and Russian timber for use in the pallet-production process.

General Cargo

Extensive storage facilities, combined with specialist handling equipment, enable Barry to offer fast and efficient cargo handling. Two quayside transit sheds, totalling 7,500 sq m, are available at No. 2 Dock, while No. 3 Dock Basin is a 4.8-ha site, comprising a purpose-built general-cargo terminal of 4,560 sq m. Barry also has facilities for handling ro-ro vessels, with stern and three-quarter ramp discharge available.

Liquid Bulks

Liquid bulks are an important trade at Barry, with most liquid-bulk throughput destined for the local chemical industry. Vopak provides 45,000 cu m of liquid-bulk storage at No. 2 Dock, having recently developed a new tank farm on the Windmill site near the port, to cater for the increased throughput generated by Dow Corning’s Genesis plant.

Steel & Other Metals

Barry provides both covered and outside storage facilities for the storage and handling of steel cargoes. Dunn Brothers (1995) Ltd operates a recycled-metal import and export terminal at 31 Berth on No. 2 Dock that also benefits from rail-connected facilities.
