Dry bulks ABP manages over 10,000 sq m of common-user flatstores on the port estate, which are available for both port- and non-port-related traffics. Garston Agribulk Terminal comprises 6,000 sq m of segregated storage for handling a range of milling grain and animal feedstuff. The facility is both UKASTA- / GAFTA- and Soil Association-approved, and can handle non-GM and organic produce. Additionally, port users with produce originating from outside the European Union can benefit from the terminal’s HM Revenue & Customs duty-free approval. A comprehensive range of value-added services is at hand for dry-bulk customers, including bagging, blending, rip-and-tip and stock control. ABP also operates a dedicated store, with around 1 ha of paved storage and a high-speed bagging plant, for fertiliser and other agribulks. Open and secure quayside stockpile areas serve the large quantities of aggregates and industrial bulks also handled at Garston. Frank Armitt & Son Ltd operates 8,500 sq m of modern bulk/multi-purpose storage, which is split into 500, 700 and 1,200 sq m units. These are internally divided and all have 3-m high concrete walls.
General cargo With its reinforced and wide quays, extensive handling equipment and ample covered and open storage, the port accommodates a wide range of breakbulk traffics, including palletised and other unitised cargoes. Heavy-lift and project shipments (weighing in excess of 200 tonnes) are also a feature of port traffic. A dedicated timber-storage terminal is situated within the port estate. General cargo and steel berths are equipped with rail-mounted cranes, capable of lifting between six and 30 tonnes. Covered storage is also available.
Steel Through its main terminal operator, Frank Armitt & Son Ltd, the Port of Garston has built an enviable reputation for the handling of various steel products. There are two specialised steel-coil stores, totalling 2,500 sq m, one of which is adjacent to a deep water-discharge berth. Two 25-tonne capacity overhead gantry cranes serve each facility. In addition, there is over 7,000 sq m of conventional covered storage served by specialised handling equipment. Ample open storage is also readily available. Frank Armitt & Son Ltd provides ‘just in time’ delivery, along with a comprehensive range of services associated with steel handling.
