Containers

Goole’s Boothferry Terminal has benifited from significant investment by both ABP and its operator, RMS Europe. The terminal handles conventional cargo and containers. Set on a 6.5-ha site, Boothferry Terminal boasts two rail-mounted container gantry cranes, a fleet of reachstackers, five storage sheds totalling 16,000 sq m, 25,000 sq m of quayside open storage and a similar area of open back storage for the handling of containers for UCI. The terminal benefits from direct connections to the UK’s canal network and a direct rail link, providing great flexibility for the receiving and dispatch of cargo.

Aldam Terminal has two mobile harbour cranes, a fleet of forklift trucks and four storage sheds. The terminal is a base for Transatlantic (UK) Ltd, which runs a regular service to and from the Swedish ports of Västerås, Oxelösund, Södertälje and Oskarshamn.

Dry Bulks

Goole has a long-established reputation for its efficient handling of bulk cargoes. Caldaire Terminal provides multi-product storage for a wide range of commodities, including agribulks, animal feed, timber and biomass, all of which can be stored under one roof without risk of contamination. The terminal has a 200-m long berth; a 3,000 sq m specialist bulk-storage shed divided into permanent separate bays; a 1,900 sq m shed with an overhead crane for the handling and storage of steel and general cargo; and two further sheds measuring 3,500 sq m and 3,200 sq m.

South Dock Terminals Ltd operates a terminal designed for high-speed operations in the handling of fertilisers, construction materials, timber, animal feed, biomass and clay products. The terminal, which is equipped with three storage sheds totalling 7,000 sq m, has a mobile-grabbing crane, front-loading shovels and

skid-steer loaders, and can load over-side barges and other vessels. Ouse Dock, with a silo and weighbridge, has a 1,500 sq m warehouse where bulk chemicals are stored, packed and distributed.

At West Dock, scrap metal cargoes are imported and exported by Cronimet (GB) Ltd. The bulk-cement terminal at Stanhope Dock, operated by Damac Bulk Handling Ltd, employs self-discharging techniques, has silo capacity of 10,000 tonnes and handles cement cargoes from Norway and Denmark. Maize, milling wheats, specialised grain and animal feed are handled at South Dock by NW Trading Ltd, with silos that can accommodate a total of 14,000 tonnes. High-grade, value-added products are discharged by grab onto a belt conveyor/elevator and gravity-fed into bins, minimising movement and limiting breakages of brittle commodities. Recently, a 6,000 sq m shed was constructed for NW Trading Ltd for the storage of dry-bulk cargoes.

Forest Products

Timber traffic predominantly comprises imports from Russia and the Baltic states, as well as from Finland and Sweden. In addition, board materials are imported from French and Iberian ports. Increasing quantities of timber, imported from the east coast of Sweden, are handled at Aldam Terminal.

Several major improvements have been made to storage facilities at the Port of Goole in recent years. A shed of 2,700 sq m was completed at Ouse Dock for Transatlantic (UK) Ltd to improve the undercover storage of kiln-dried and specialised timber. At West Dock, a 10,250 sq m timber- and board materials-storage shed was constructed to supplement the existing areas of covered storage for Global Shipping Services Ltd and a 3,000 sq m shed was built to store woodpulp for Scotline Ltd. Additional storage sheds have also recently been constructed at Boothferry Terminal to supplement the existing covered storage for the handling of paper and steel traffic by RMS Europe Ltd.

Liquid Bulks

Barge Dock provides two tank-storage facilities operated by the Kerfoot Group Ltd for the storage of imported vegetable oils. Oils are also imported and exported by direct transfer to road tankers.

Steel & Other Cargo

Goole’s wide variety of facilities enables it to handle imports and exports of almost every kind of cargo, especially chipboard, aluminium, stainless steel, paper and agribulks. The 6,000 sq m covered Steel Terminal, which is located at Boothferry Terminal and operated by RMS Europe Ltd, allows ships to load and discharge in all weather conditions. At West Dock South, further storage sheds for steel products provide modern facilities for customers.

Caldaire Terminal stores and handles a wide range of cargoes, including steel and general cargo. It has a 200-m long berth, plus a 1,900 sq m shed with an overhead crane, and 3,500 and 3,200 sq m sheds.
