Dry Bulks & Forest Products

Grimsby handles a wide range of forest products, including carcassing and structural lumber, woodpulp and panel products. The port has regular services operating to and from Scandinavia and the Baltic states.

ABP-Rowlinson Timber Terminal offers a state-of-the-art timber-treatment facility, which uses the most up-to-date, environmentally friendly processes to protect timber from decay and insect attack.

Grain exports and a range of minerals and agribulk imports are also regularly handled at Grimsby.

Fresh Produce & Perishables

Grimsby plays a pivotal role in both the UK’s frozen-food and fishing industries. Its fully modernised fish market handles some 30,000 tonnes of fresh fish each year, landed not only from the local catching fleet, but also from containers arriving from Norway and Iceland, as well as overland from other UK ports. Grimsby’s Royal Dock regularly handles imports of frozen fish from Norway, Iceland, the Faroe Islands and Russia.

General Cargo, Minerals & Ores, Steel & Other Metals

In addition to handling timber products, Freshney Cargo Services handle a wide range of cargoes, including bulk ores and minerals, such as magnetite, copperas and bauxite, as well as other general cargoes, such as non-ferrous metals, iron and steel.

Ro-Ro

Grimsby is a market-leading vehicle-handling port and is the principal centre for this traffic in Northern Britain, handling almost 450,000 vehicles each year. It is home to the Northern Distribution Centre of Volkswagen Group UK Ltd and handles not only Volkswagen and Audi vehicles, but also growing volumes of Seats and Skodas. Grimsby is also the main export centre for Toyota cars manufactured at the Toyota plant at Burnaston, Derbyshire, and is also an important import centre for the French-built Toyota Yaris. In addition, the port’s customers include other manufacturers, such as Mercedes-Benz and Opel.

Ro-ro traffic at Grimsby is handled at two dedicated berths on Alexandra Dock, backed by a state-of-the-art terminal offering pre-delivery inspection and accessory-fitting services. Vehicle handling is provided by GB Agencies, which provides a comprehensive management and stevedoring service for car manufacturers using the latest stock-control systems, to enable efficient vehicle tracking.

As testimony to the future growth of the port’s ro-ro operations, ABP has launched a feasibility study into additional berthing options outside of the lock, to extend the size and quantity of vessels that Grimsby will be able to accommodate in the future.
