Dry bulks

Aggregates, agribulks, cement, chemicals, coal, cocoa and grain are all handled at the Port of Hull. Benefiting from substantial recent investment, both by ABP and its customers, these dry-bulk trades are supported by a broad range of modern dry bulk-handling facilities.

Humber Sand and Gravel Ltd supplies the local construction industry from the company’s terminal based at Hull’s Alexandra Dock. Harding Cargo Handling Ltd also handles aggregates, as well as other dry-bulk traffic, from its terminals in Alexandra Dock and Albert Dock.

New Holland Bulk Services’ terminal, in King George Dock, handles animal feed and other dry bulks, with its own 28-tonne capacity floating crane and weigh tower. Vessels of up to 30,000 dwt can be handled, and the berth is linked to a 40,000-tonne store by a direct conveyor. Titan Cement (UK) Ltd has a specialised facility for handling quality-assured cement from Greece.

Grains, such as wheat and barley, are stored at a specialist silo facility in King George Dock. The silo, which is operated by Frontier Agriculture Ltd, has a capacity of 60,000 tonnes, and cargoes are exported to a variety of European destinations.

Stema Shipping (UK) Ltd has a terminal in Queen Elizabeth Dock for handling aggregates imported from Norway.

Sims Group UK Ltd operates a scrap-metal exporting facility in Queen Elizabeth Dock.

NW Trading operates a dry bulks terminal in King George Dock, specialising in agribulk and biomass products.

Hull offers:

  • Aggregates: Sand and gravel cargoes are handled by Humber Sand and Gravel Limited at their Alexandra Dock-based terminal. This material is dredged in the North Sea using specialist vessels to supply the local construction industry. Aggregates and other dry bulk traffic are also handled by Harding Cargo Handling Ltd at their Albert Dock facility.
  • Agribulks: Specialist handling and storage is offered by New Holland Bulk Services (Hull) Limited, with 40,000 tonnes of covered storage capacity available and a direct conveyor link from the discharging berth. A 28-tonne floating crane is also available and a floating weigh tower can be deployed within King George, Queen Elizabeth and Alexandra Docks.
  • Cement: Titan Cement UK Ltd operates a dedicated terminal with a storage capacity of 20,000 tonnes, handling imports of quality-assured cement from Greece.
  • Chemicals: The Euro-terminal in Alexandra Dock is operated by Harding Cargo Handling Ltd. A number of dry bulk cargoes are handled at the terminal including grains and andimal feeds but cargoes include imports of bulk soda ash which is used in the manufacture of glass.
  • Coal and coal products: Kingston Terminal, Queen Elizabeth Dock, is operated by Hull Bulk Handling Limited and specialises in coal and petroleum handling, with other products accommodated on demand. Quayside discharge is linked to 0.4 ha of open storage by covered conveyor or can be direct to motor through-hoppers.
  • Cocoa: Both bagged and bulk cocoa is handled in Hull, with dedicated storage facilities serving major producers such as Rowntree Nestle and Cadbury.
  • Grain: A specialist silo facility for grain exports in King George Dock is operated by Frontier Agriculture. With a maximum capacity of 60,000 tonnes, it mainly handles worldwide exports of wheat and barley. Grain is also handled at the Euro-terminal at Alexandra Dock and by Harding Cargo Handling Ltd at Albert Dock.
