Containers

Cliff Quay Container Terminal is equipped with a 40-tonne capacity crane and rail-mounted gantries, each with a 35.6-tonne capacity. Container lines can also take advantage of adjacent warehousing for distribution services.

In 2007, Ipswich began handling container exports, on behalf of China Shipping Group and Maersk Line, from the West Bank Container Terminal.

Dry bulks

Aggregates, grain, animal feed, fertilisers and cement are among the dry bulks handled by the Port of Ipswich. ABP’s Coldock Terminal offers over 16,000 sq m of covered, bonded warehousing complete with segregated bays, a dedicated plant to serve distinct commodities, two 60-tonne weighbridges and a bagging operation. Animal feed and grain imports and exports are handled by The Grain Terminal (Ipswich) and Sentinel Shipping Services, through purpose-built, modern terminals, while IAWS Fertilisers and Southern Cement Ltd operate newly built, dedicated facilities for the handling of imported bulks. The port has three aggregates terminals, operated by Brett Aggregates, Cemex Aggregates and Tarmac Quarry Products.

Forest products

Ipswich has been handling forest products from Scandinavia and the Baltic states for many years and currently handles around 300,000 cu m per annum of various timber products. A state-of-the-art timber-treatment centre offers chromium- and arsenic-free wood-preservative treatment. Customers are assured of a fast, high-quality service, with the added benefit of no-cost transfer from the adjacent discharge berth to the treatment plant.

General cargo

Ipswich has considerable experience in general-cargo handling and has plant, equipment and weighbridges to cater for heavy-lift and project cargoes. A monthly general cargo and container service – operated by Europe-Caribbean Line – links Ipswich to the Caribbean. Fresh produce, steel and palletised cargoes are also handled regularly by the port.

Liquid bulks

Ipswich offers a liquid-bulk terminal, operated by Vopak, with capacity for 89,000 cu m of oil and chemical products. The terminal is fed from four berths, across each of which up to four products may be handled simultaneously at rates of up to 400 tonnes per hour. The terminal is able to offer storage in stainless steel-lined and carbon-steel tanks. A full range of services is available, such as blending, heating, drumming, administrative documentation and independently operated laboratory facilities.

Ro-ro

The port’s ro-ro terminal is located at West Bank Terminal, and benefits from direct access to the UK’s rail infrastructure.
