Minerals and ores
The port has developed a wide range of experience in the handling of bulk traffic such as coal and coke for a wide variety of customers. The port enjoys high levels of productivity and will guarantee to discharge an average of 6,000 tonnes per day. The port holds all the requisite environmental licences for the handling of coal, and the coal-handling site is located well away from other port activities. Newport is seeking to diversify its minerals-handling capabilities and is actively seeking new ventures in this area.
The port’s dedicated bulk terminal, which can accommodate two vessels simultaneously, is located on the south side of South Dock. With the ability to discharge vessels of up to 40,000 DWT, it offers:
- A 2-ha site, adjacent to the quay, supported by a further 40 ha of back-store area.
- A direct rail spur into the terminal, enabling easy re-load, minimising handling requirements and reducing the cost of haulage on some cargoes.
- Four ten-tonne capacity grabbing cranes backed up by a 45-tonne Mannesman Demag mobile crane with 16-tonne grab capacity. The grabbing cranes serve to reduce damage to anthracitic and other brittle cargoes.
- A large fleet of shovels is available for reloading cargo from the terminal.
- Coal washing, screening and blending facilities are also available within the port estate, through private operators Hargreaves Industrial Services and Westland Coal.
