Steel and other metals
The port has a wealth of experience in handling steel traffic including coil, plates, section, bar, tinplate and slab and handles in excess of half a million tonnes of steel per annum. ABP has recently invested £825,000 on an extension to the ABP Dowds Terminal, increasing capacity by 3,000 sq m, to provide 10,000 sq m of modern, covered storage.
Newport Steel Terminal is the port’s bespoke export-steel facility, offering:
- A dedicated berth serviced by two 25-tonne capacity quayside cranes.
- Over 10,000 sq m of covered storage served directly by both road and rail, giving a range of delivery options and potential savings on haulage costs.
- State-of-the-art equipment including two 40-tonne capacity gantry cranes, a fleet of 75-tonne capacity trailers and 28-tonne capacity forklift trucks. Coil-racking ensures high quality storage and allows for order-picking of cargo with minimised damage and delay.
- An advanced computer system for the management of imports, providing accurate stock control thus minimising delays on redelivery.
- Cargo-handling undertaken by an experienced and skilled team, operating in a secure and safe facility.
- Automatic doors, ensuring that the environment within the terminal remains clean and dry.
- An additional 10,000 sq m of open storage is available for non-weather-sensitive cargo.
The port can also arrange a total logistics package for steel cargoes, either on a conventional warehousing basis or in conjunction with port customer WE Dowds, who operate a dedicated gantry-served import facility. Island Steel Ltd, another port customer, operate a steel-slitting facility providing the ports’ steel customers with a convenient, value-added service.
