Containers

Swansea Container Terminal operates a 3-ha, rail-connected container berth at the eastern end of King’s Dock. The terminal offers dedicated facilities for services to Ireland, Northern Europe, the Iberian peninsula and ports around the UK. Factors such as reduced vessel deviation and a sizeable tidal window make Swansea an ideal container port from which to serve South Wales, the South-West and the Midlands.

Dry Bulks

ABP has invested £1.8m in discharge, warehousing and bagging facilities for Yara (UK) Ltd, which handles over 50,000 tonnes of agribulks each year. In 2007, the Port of Swansea also invested in two Caterpillar telehandlers to enhance agribulk-handling operations at the port.

Dan Morrissey Cement (UK) Ltd imports cement through the port and has, in recent years, invested in an extension to its warehouse and mechanised bagging and palletising plant. The port also provides berths for the discharge of locally dredged sand, and regularly handles other aggregates, including pumice and stone.

Minerals & Ores

At Swansea Container Terminal, exports for Celtic Energy are soft-loaded into a ship’s hold using a customised container-tipping operation.

No. 4 Quay in King’s Dock is used for grab-loading of anthracite duff, and can handle substantial volumes of power-station coal for direct loading to the terminal’s rail sidings. Gragiola Wharf has two grabbing cranes of up to 10-tonne capacity and a 3-ha quayside site with concrete surfacing, licensed for the storage and screening of coal and other bulk products.

Forest Products

Swansea receives regular shipments of forest products from the Far East, Southern Europe, South America and the Baltic states. On the back of a recent 15-year agreement with customer RKL Plywood, ABP invested £1.7m in the construction of a further 5,000 sq m of covered storage at the port’s Forest Products Terminal. This increases the total available area to 15,000 sq m.

Rose Wharf is used for the handling of log cargoes by Tilhill Forestry Ltd, which has included several shipments transported by ABP’s timberLINK service. Regular shipments of wood pulp are also handled at the port on behalf of a number of wood-pulp producers that supply local tissue manufacturers.

General Cargo

Many types of general, project and heavy-lift cargoes are accommodated at Swansea, which has extensive storage and cranage for fast and efficient handling. The port estate also has large areas of open storage available for non-weather sensitive cargo. In 2007, the port handled thousands of tonnes of concrete sections for Amazon’s new distribution centre in Swansea Bay.

Passengers & Cruises

The Port of Swansea is situated on the edge of the five-mile sweep of Swansea Bay. Wales’ waterfront city is situated adjacent to the Gower peninsula, the UK’s first Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, featuring dramatic limestone cliffs in contrast to beautiful sandy beaches.

The city was the birthplace of Dylan Thomas, whose life and works are celebrated in the Dylan Thomas Centre. The port has a number of facilities approved to accommodate cruise vessels and is able to offer a full range of services to vessels depending upon requirements. Facilities are available for both turnaround and call-in cruise visits.

Ro-Ro

Swansea Ferryport comprises a single berth with passenger facilities and car-marshalling areas, and a 76-m linkspan bridge, which can be lowered through 12.95 m to allow for variation in tide levels and ships’ flotation.

Steel & Other Metals

Swansea Steel Terminal accommodates vessels of up to 30,000 dwt and offers 15,000 sq m of covered storage for weather-sensitive cargoes and a further 3.5 ha of open storage and it is complemented with a range of cranes and handling equipment.

Cargoes handled at the terminal include aluminium, palletised copper and reinforcing bars, and steel coil. Scrap metal is regularly handled at Graigola Wharf and 4 Quay.
