ABP LOOKS FORWARD TO ‘YEAR OF DECISION’ ON DIBDEN TERMINAL PROJECT
Bo Lerenius, Chief Executive of Associated British Ports Holdings PLC, said today (Monday, 22 December 2003) that the waiting is almost over for supporters of the Dibden Terminal project.
Mr Lerenius said:
“After an extremely thorough planning inquiry, lasting a full year, followed by 10 months of deliberation by the Inspector, the report on the Dibden Terminal is now with the Secretary of State. We believe that 2004 will be our ‘year of decision’ on this project which is vital for the UK economy.
“ABP is determined to see the premier position of the Port of Southampton maintained. Our plans for Dibden Terminal, along with our other investments in the existing Port of Southampton, will secure this leading role well into the future, sustaining existing employment and providing many new jobs for local people.
“We believe that the total development package we put together is an excellent one and deserves to be approved.
“The need for additional container-port capacity is with us right now, as was recently recognised by the House of Commons’ Transport Select Committee. ABP is ready to commence works in Dibden Terminal as soon as the Government gives us the green light.”
