NHS UNIT AND PORT PLOUGH THE EARTH Green-fingered patients at Pen-Yr-Ynys will be going back to their roots as part of their rehabilitation and respite care after Associated British Ports’ (ABP) South Wales Ports donated a plot of land for the NHS unit to transform into an allotment. ABP gave the land at Clive Road on Barry Island to Pen-Yr-Ynys along with a donation of £250 for tools and equipment to get the project off the ground. The allotment project will allow patients at the unit – which aims to help and support individuals recovering from mental health problems grow in experience and competence in a full range of life skills – to become involved in growing vegetables and creating and nurturing a small garden. “This will be of significant benefit and will allow individuals to improve their confidence and self-esteem,” said David Willicombe, Pen-Yr-Ynys Manager. “Pen-Yr-Ynys has patio areas to the front and rear of the house and, as such, does not really have a garden. This allotment will be a valuable and therapeutic asset and will provide us and our patients with a new resource,” he added. John Copping, ABP Port Director, South Wales Ports, said: “This is an extremely worthy project and I am pleased that ABP could help.It will be good to see new life breathed into this redundant area of land and know, at the same time, that the transformation of the land is helping others to learn and grow.” 14th September 2004
