SWEET SUCCESS FOR PORT OF CARDIFF

The UK’s largest animal-feed importer has begun importing molasses – the by-product of cane and beet-sugar production – for the very first time through a new dedicated import facility at the Port of Cardiff.

Associated British Ports (ABP), owner and operator of the port, has invested £350,000 to convert two storage tanks and install new ship-to-shore pipelines, as part of a five-year contract, to handle this new business for Arkady Feed.

The m.v. Orakota, the first ship to call at the new facility, discharged 2,500 tonnes of molasses sourced from Pakistan.

John Copping, ABP Port Director, South Wales Ports, said:

“The Port of Cardiff has many years’ experience handling liquid bulks - from chemicals and petrochemicals to fuel oil and diesel. This diversification into liquid feedstuff will further strengthen the port’s position in this trade sector.”

Arkady Feed is part of the international Toepfer group. The new facility at Cardiff is a major step forward for the company, as Managing Director Graham Atkinson explains:

“The creation of a dedicated facility at Cardiff will enable us to gain a foothold in the UK molasses market and provide a cost-effective and quality service to our customers.”

The new facility is GMP-compliant* and will be able to store up to 10,000 tonnes of molasses.

Editors’ Notes

Molasses is a versatile product, often used as a binding agent for animal-feed pellets; it is also used in a number of industrial processes such as the manufacture of charcoal briquettes.

*A terminal which is Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) compliant means that it has been externally audited and meets all the criteria for handling animal feed as set out by the United Kingdom Agricultural Supply Trade Association’s (UKASTA) Feed Materials Assurance Scheme (FEMAS).The FEMAS scheme is part of an ongoing strategy to build confidence in UK livestock production through the use of safe animal feed.
