ABP ACCEPTS CONTROL OF RIVER USK

Associated British Ports (ABP) South Wales and Newport Harbour Commissioners (NHC) have recently signed a five-year agreement that will see ABP marine personnel assuming harbour master duties for the River Usk, Newport.

The responsibility – which previously lay with NHC – was transferred to ABP following the successful completion of a six-month trial. The agreement allows NHC to concentrate on expanding marine operations on the river.

Ian Roberts, Chairman of Newport Harbour Commissioners, said:

“By contracting out the functions of a Harbour Master to ABP, the Commissioners can ensure that vessels navigating the river and NHC – who remains the Statutory Harbour Authority for the River Usk – benefit from the expertise which ABP personnel are able to provide.”

Captain Philip Holliday, ABP Marine Manager for South Wales, commented:

“By providing this service to NHC, ABP is able to utilise the recently installed Vessel Traffic Services facility at Cardiff, which allows vessels to navigate the Severn Estuary safely and efficiently, 24 hours a day. The agreement will no doubt improve vessel-traffic flows on the River Usk, with positive effects for the Port of Newport as well.”
