STAVROS S NIARCHOS VISITS PORT OF SWANSEA
Associated British Ports’ (ABP) Port of Swansea will see an unusually graceful vessel glide into the docks this week. Stavros S Niarchos, a two-masted brig, is scheduled to arrive today, Tuesday, 18 October 2005, and leave on Thursday, 20 October.
The vessel, carrying a complement of 48 volunteer crewmembers, will be hosting an open day for the local community on Wednesday, 19 October. The day will feature visits from local schools, students completing their Duke of Edinburgh awards and youth workers, and will culminate in an evening reception onboard. The ship will sail the following morning, destined for Portsmouth via France, with a crew of 42 teenagers and young adults.
The brig, which last visited Swansea in 2000, is owned by the Tall Ships Youth Trust, a registered charity dedicated to the personal development of young people aged 16 to 25. The vessel will be berthed in the port’s Prince of Wales Dock.
John Fitzgerald, Port Director for ABP’s South Wales Ports, said:
“ABP is proud to continue to support the Tall Ships Youth Trust in their selfless endeavour to better the lives of today’s youth. I hope that those sponsored by the Trust’s local Swansea committee to sail with Stavros S Niarchos will enjoy what promises to be a wonderful experience.”
