WORLD’S LARGEST WOODEN ‘TALL SHIP’ VISITS CARDIFF The largest wooden ‘Tall Ship’ of her kind in the world - SV Tenacious - will arrive at Associated British Ports’ (ABP) Port of Cardiff today, Friday, 7 July 2006, from Belfast, Northern Ireland. ABP is happy to support the work of the charity that owns the vessel - the Jubilee Sailing Trust. The vessel will be welcomed to Cardiff by the Vale of Glamorgan brass band as she berths at the port’s Britannia Quay at approximately 5pm today. Members of the public are welcome to come and see SV Tenacious dock this afternoon, and will have an opportunity to board the ship between 10am and 6pm on Sunday, 9 July. SV Tenacious will depart for Southampton on Tuesday, 11 July. SV Tenacious was designed and built specifically to accommodate the disabled. She is one of only two ‘Tall Ships’ in the world equipped to do so. Facilities aboard include powered lifts and wide decks for wheelchair users, a speaking compass for blind crew members and a bright-track radar for the partially sighted. Andy Spark, Ship Operations Manager of the Jubilee Sailing Trust, said: “Established in 1978, the Jubilee Sailing Trust has ferried over 10,000 disabled people to sea. For the majority of them, sailing onboard one of our two ‘Tall Ships’ has been a life-changing experience. With the support of ABP, the Trust can continue to offer the disabled an unforgettable sailing voyage.” Councillor Nigel Howells, Cardiff Council’s Executive Member for Sport, Leisure and Culture, said: “We welcome Tenacious to Cardiff Bay. Cardiff Council already supports the Jubilee Sailing Trust in promoting sailing to those with disabilities. We hope to welcome the Trust’s vessels to Cardiff very soon again in the future.” John Fitzgerald, ABP Port Director, South Wales Ports, commented: “Based at the Port of Southampton, the two vessels of the Jubilee Sailing Trust – Lord Nelson and Tenacious – are no strangers to ABP’s 21 ports across the UK, and we are glad to be able to support the Trust in their worthy quest to bring the joys of sailing to the disabled.“ 7th July 2006
