ABP’S HUMBER INTERNATIONAL TERMINAL SETS NEW MONTHLY RECORD

Humber International Terminal, Associated British Ports’ (ABP) coal and dry-bulks handling facilities at its Port of Immingham, has broken its monthly throughput record, exceeding 1,000,000 tonnes for the first time.

Figures for August show that the facility handled a record-breaking total of 1,095,094 tonnes, of which 1,022,746 tonnes was coal, with the remaining tonnage split between animal feedstuff importers Arkady Feed UK Ltd and Cefetra.

This record-breaking feat comes just three months after the official opening of Humber International Terminal 2 by HRH The Princess Royal in May. The £59.5 million facility is the second berth to be constructed at Humber International Terminal. The dedicated coal-handling facility counts mining giant BHP Billiton, as well as power-station operators International Power, Scottish and Southern Energy, Drax Power and EDF Energy, among its customers.

ABP Port Director for Grimsby & Immingham Nick Palmer said that the achievement was made possible through ABP’s targeted investment to expand Humber International Terminal’s handling capacity.

“Breaking our monthly record just three months after the official opening of Humber International Terminal 2 is very pleasing and augurs well for a very healthy future for the port. The terminal is the single largest and most expensive development project yet to be undertaken by ABP in its entire history. It is underpinned by a number of long-term agreements with a number of quality customers, so we have always been confident that our investment would quickly yield great results.”

Humber International Terminal 2, which took 23 months to build, extends Humber International Terminal’s total quay length by 220 m, giving a total of 520 m, and can accommodate vessels carrying more than 100,000 tonnes of cargo. Equipped with the latest and most modern dockside plant and fully automated landside operations, the terminal has the capacity to handle an estimated 9.5 million tonnes of coal each year, imported from countries including the US, South Africa, Indonesia, Poland and Russia. The majority of the product is transported from the port to end-users by train.

Humber International Terminal 2 is the second phase of development of Humber International Terminal. Opened by The Princess Royal in October 2000, the first phase of the riverside terminal was built to receive deep-sea dry-bulk carriers. From the outset, it has been one of the port’s greatest success stories, handling approximately 25 million tonnes of cargo since becoming operational.
