PRESS STATEMENT, FRIDAY, 22 SEPTEMBER 2006

A spokesman for ABP said:

“We can confirm that a humpback whale, approximately 25 ft in length, beached on the bank on the approach to King George Dock in the Port of Hull at approximately 9:00pm last night. British Marine Rescue, Humber Rescue and Humber Fire Service were quickly called to the scene and worked throughout the night to keep the whale alive until high tide this morning when the whale was to be re-floated. Despite their best efforts, the whale died at 2:30am.

“The whale has been safely secured to the dock. ABP is currently discussing plans with Hull City Council and the Environment Agency for the safe and efficient disposal of the carcass. Port operations at Hull have been unaffected by the incident.”
