BRONZE COMMUNITY AWARD FOR PORTS OF AYR & TROON

Ayrshire Business in the Community has presented Associated British Ports’ (ABP) Ports of Ayr & Troon with its Bronze Award for Community Excellence, recognising the investment – both financial and non-financial – that the ports contribute to the local community.

Ayrshire Business in the Community is a business-led initiative that was established in 2001 to support and encourage private-sector involvement within Ayrshire’s communities. The Bronze Award was set up to reward the local businesses that they consider to have been successful in this regard.

The Ports of Ayr & Troon – which directly employ 28 people and indirectly support the employment of hundreds of others – is a major contributor to Ayrshire’s regional economy. The ports handle dry bulks, general cargo, forest products, minerals and ores. Troon is also home to the TimberLink project, an environmentally friendly initiative aimed at reducing timber movements by road and increasing the use of sea transport as an alternative.

Stuart Cresswell, ABP Port Manager, Ayr & Troon, said: “All our staff at Ayr and Troon are keen that we play a proactive role in the community, and we are delighted that these efforts have been recognised by this award. Traditionally, ports are at the heart of communities, and we want to keep it that way. As a business, we have to be careful to manage a busy commercial port while remembering that our operations could potentially affect the community if carried out incorrectly, and this is a responsibility that every member of staff takes extremely seriously.”

He added: “I am also very pleased that ABP should be credited for the many years of hard work that our personnel department has put into introducing and implementing a wide range family-focused policies. These include ABP’s private medical insurance programme and its employee assistance programme, which provides a free, 24-hour confidential advisory service.”

Lesley Craig, Ayrshire Business in the Community, said: “ABP has declared its community commitment not only through the achievement of the Bronze Award for Community Excellence, but also through its corporate social responsibility programme, which clearly outlines the organisation’s responsibilities and vision for interaction with local communities, its customers and its staff.”

She added: “I am delighted to have had the pleasure of presenting to the management and staff of the Ports of Ayr & Troon the Bronze Award, and I have every confidence that they will be achieving the Silver level in the very near future – well done and keep up the good work!”
