NO TEARS SHED AS ABP AND CORY BROTHERS GUARANTEE YEAR-ROUND ONIONS FOR THE UK Associated British Ports’ (ABP) Port of Ipswich recently renewed a term agreement with shipping agency Cory Brothers Shipping Ltd to continue handling thousands of tonnes of New Zealand onions at the port. The three-year agreement will see the port handle some 25,000 tonnes of produce each summer, when the New Zealand onions – noted for their dun-coloured bulbs, high quality and longevity – are imported to the UK to cover for seasonal shortages in British supermarkets. Ken Dickson, Commercial Manager for Cory Brothers, commented: “As the UK agents for shipowners Spliethoffs – who transport the onions – Cory Brothers has organised annual shipments of New Zealand onions to the Port of Ipswich for the last decade, and this agreement will ensure that we continue to do so well into the future. The port’s cargo-handling facilities and stevedoring services are first class and I look forward to continuing our close working relationship.” Bob Smith, one of the region’s leading vegetable brokers, said: “It is very satisfying to see that the ongoing shipments of New Zealand onions have been secured and will continue through ABP’s Port of Ipswich in the coming years. This agreement is a direct result of the good working practices and service levels provided by the port and Cory Brothers to various UK onion receivers.” Alan Mason, Commercial Manager for ABP’s East Anglian Ports, said: “The recent renewal of ABP’s term agreement with Cory Brothers to handle shipments of onions reflects ABP’s commitment to building long-term relationships with its customers. I would especially like to thank Bob Smith for his early pioneering work that enabled the Port of Ipswich to handle onions successfully, and hope that, together, we can develop ABP’s business with Cory Brothers in the future.” Alastair MacFarlane, Port Manager for ABP’s East Anglian Ports, added: “ABP’s East Anglian Ports of Ipswich, Lowestoft and King’s Lynn are able to handle almost any type of cargo, offering an unrivalled service to a wide range of customers across the region.”26th October 2006
