ABP SOUTHAMPTON’S NEW WIND INSTRUMENT Associated British Ports’ (ABP) Port of Southampton has recently taken delivery of a WindMaster ultrasonic anemometer, one of a new generation of devices intended to measure the speed and direction of the wind. The WindMaster has been developed by Gill Instruments, a specialist company based in Lymington, Hampshire. Ian Bywaters and Mark Terrell, of Gill Instruments, recently presented the anemometer to William Heaps, ABP Hydrographic Manager, at the port’s Mayflower Terminal. The WindMaster is part of Gill’s ‘Solent’ range of three-axis anemometers. Featuring no moving parts and a 20Hz data rate, it has facilities that can combine the outputs from multiple instruments to then form one data stream, which can be transmitted by wireless link to a base station. William Heaps said: “The anemometer will be placed in an exposed position on the Mayflower Terminal, located at 106 Berth in the port’s Western Docks. We expect it to provide us with measurements that will improve our efforts to gauge wind conditions in the Western Docks, as conditions there can sometimes vary from those measured at our other weather stations at Dock Head and Bramble Bank. The data will be made available, in real time, to staff in the Southampton Vessel Traffic Services Centre and, in turn, to the Pilots and Masters of vessels employed in that region of the port. The Western Docks is used by a wide variety of ships, including numerous well-known cruise ships, as well as the largest container vessels in the world, and they will benefit from the introduction and use of this device.” Gill Instruments has supplied ABP with a number of monitoring instruments, for use at a selection of the Group’s ports around the UK. It is a leading manufacturer of ultrasonic anemometers, which it supplies worldwide through its extensive distribution network. 7th December 2006
